Origin:

Warren Worthington III was born into an extremely rich family, but his comfortable life changed in his late teens when his mutant powers developed and he began to grow wings. Warren kept them hidden under his clothes and even wore a special harness that bound them down to his back to make them harder to notice. One night at school, a fire broke out and Warren had no choice except to jump out a window, in the hope that the wings would slow his fall. He found out that he could fly with them, and saved the other boys in his dormitory from the fire. The rescue inspired Warren to fight crime as the Avenging Angel, which brought him to the attention of Professor X). Xavier ran a school for mutants of which he secretly trained his mutant superhero team, the X-Men. When Angel first met the other X-Men, Cyclops and Iceman, he thought at first that they were thieves after a vial which he had retrieved from some thieves that night.

However, it turned out that the "vial" was actually a miniature nuclear bomb. Angel was able to fly into the atmosphere, where it was cold enough to deactivate the bomb. Angel then became one of the founding members of the X-Men (which was foreseen by the young mutant Mary Margaret many years earlier). At first Warren disguised his face with a mask, but later discarded it because he felt that his handsome, telegenic features would gain his team public support. Angel had a crush on Jean Grey at first, but Jean secretly loved Cyclops, so whenever she and Angel would go somewhere, she would try to invite Scott along as well. During a fight with Kukulcan, Cyclops missed their enemy and accidentally hit Angel with his optic beams. Angel claimed that Cyclops had done it on purpose since he also loved Jean. Angel apologized the next day, as he had been delirious. He gave up on Jean so that she could be with Cyclops, and started dating an old friend of his, Candy Southern.

Creation:

Angel was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963 and made his first ever appearance in X-Men #1. He became a regular character in this title until Len Wein and Dave Cockrum introduced the ' All New, All Different X-Men' in 1975. This title reprinted the earlier issues and in 1970 and 1971. Angel also had his own three-part solo comic published and a back-up strip in the Ka-Zar #2 and Marvel Tales # 30 comic books. After Angel left the X-Men comics for a while, he became a part of The Champions series, along with Iceman which ran from 1975 to 1978. This series was written by Tony Isabella.

Wonder Woman

Super Name: Wonder Woman
Real Name: Diana of Themyscira
Publisher: DC Comics
Creators: William Moulton Marston, Gardner Fox
Gender: Female
Character Type: God/Eternal
First Appearance: All-Star Comics #8
Appears in: 4538 issues
Birthday: n/a
Died: None

Origins:

As one of the longest continually published comic book characters, Wonder Woman’s history has undergone some changes over the years, though a few elements remain consistent in all of her depictions. She is the princess of the Amazons, a race of women who live free of men on Paradise Island (later dubbed Themyscira). After growing up on this island, Wonder Woman (whom the Amazons named Diana) journeys to man’s world on a mission of diplomacy and peace.

Creation:

Wonder Woman’s appearance in the early golden age of comics made her the first prominent female superheroine. The psychologist William Moulton Marston created Wonder Woman somewhat as a counter reaction to the presence of prominent male superheroes (at this time Superman, Batman and Captain America) with the hopes that the character could serve as an inspiration for young children (though in certain ways it was geared more towards female readers.) Marston had been partially motivated to create this character because of the accomplishments of his own wife, who was also an accomplished academic at a time when it was difficult for women to fulfill this role. As a result, the first Wonder Woman series contained many complimentary articles and features which sought to provide guidance to a presumed female readership. There were articles for instance on the different career paths that women could pursue (according to the standards of the 1940s) as well as a series of stories on famous and accomplished women, called the Wonder Women of History. Marston introduced the character in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941. She became the lead character in Sensation Comics in 1941, and got her first solo book in 1942.

Super Name: Wolverine
Real Name: James Howlett
Publisher: Marvel
Creators: Herb Trimpe , Len Wein
Gender: Male
Character Type: Mutant
First Appearance: The Incredible Hulk #180 - And the Wind Howls... Wendigo!
Appears in: 11512 issues

The Infinity Gauntlet #4 - Cosmic Battle on the Edge of the Universe
Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #11 - ...And Dust to Dust!Wolverine #20 - Enemy Of The State, Part 1
Origin:

The man who would be known as the superhero named Wolverine was born as James Howlett Hudson in the mid 1880s in Alberta, Canada. He was the second and sickly child to Elizabeth and John Howlett Sr. His mother was ill and, in the early 1900s, a young Irish girl named Rose O'Hara was brought to the Howlett estate to be a friend and a caretaker to young James. Together they befriended a young boy named Dog, son of the grounds keeper, Thomas Logan. Dog tried to form a normal bond between the two, but due to his father’s drunken abuse, he grew to resent the pair and plotted with his father against them. After a botched robbery turns into a successful murder, young James’ powers suddenly manifest and he stabs Thomas with his newly drawn claws, also slashing Dog across the face before fainting. He and Rose flee the house and make their way through the harsh Canadian wilderness with James near-catatonic and Rose having to facilitate their transportation.

They arrive at a mine where Rose gives false names, calling James incorrectly as “Logan.” The other workers dub the revived Logan “the wolverine” because of his penchant for tenaciously digging and begin to accept him as one of their own due to his incredible work ethic. What they don’t know is that by night, he runs in the wild with a pack of wolves that he is cowed the alpha of. Dog arrives one day, having survived his encounter years ago, still holding a massive grudge against Logan. Logan recognizes his erstwhile friend and accepts his challenge to a brawl to the death. Before Logan can kill Dog, however, Rose tries to pull him away and is inadvertently stabbed through the chest, killing her and leaving Logan to mourn alone.

Creation:

At the time of his creation comics were becoming increasingly popular in Canada and Roy Thomas, Marvel's then Editor-in-Chief, suggested to Len Wein to create a Canadian character to put in the Hulk comic he was working on. The two of them ironed out details such as the name (which came down to two options--1. The Badger and 2. The Wolverine) and based details of their new character around the characteristics of the Wolverine. John Romita, Sr. was then brought on to design the character, once again using the animal as the basis for the character, making him short and stocky and introducing claws to both the character and in the motif of his costume. Wolverine was first drawn for publication by Herb Trimpe. Wolverine's mask was drawn incorrectly by Gil Kane for the cover of Giant-Size X-Men #1, but Dave Cockrum, who penciled the comic, liked it so much that he incorporated it into his own artwork for the actual story.

The Infinity Gauntlet #1 - God
Avengers/Invaders #12 - The Last Full Measure

Origin:

Janet Van Dyne was the wife of world-renowned scientist Vernon Van Dyne. In her early years she was a beautiful but flighty and self-centered dilettante, living resplendently off of her father's fortune. She had an on-and-off romantic relationship with the world-renowned soldier-of-fortune named Paladin. Tragedy struck when a deadly alien called a Kosmosian was brought to Earth as a result of one of her father's experiments, and the elder Van Dyne was murdered by the alien. A grieving Janet then contacted her father's colleague, Dr. Henry Pym. She told Pym of her resolve to bring her father's killer to justice. Pym, who was attracted to Janet and anxious to help, revealed his secret identity as Ant-Man and offered to give her similar powers. Janet underwent an advanced biochemical process involving his Pym Particles that allowed her to shrink to insect-sized proportions and to grow translucent insect wings. Furthermore, Pym outfitted her with personalized wrist devices which allowed her to discharge bio-electric energy blasts which she called her "wasp stings." Designing a colorful costume for herself (the first of many), Janet Van Dyne became the superheroine known as the Wasp.

Character Evolution:

She was created by her husbands discovery of the PYM particle which enables a human to shrink into an different size. The Wasp held true to a pattern common among Silver Age female characters. This was demonstrated in one of two ways. She was generally demonstrated as dependent on her male partner (Hank Pym) for all of her super-abilities, and was mostly incapable of her own scientific understanding and ability. This extended as well to her playing the damsel-in-distress role from time-to-time, also a common trait among female characters in the silver age. As was also common for the period, her early appearances featured a somewhat standoffish attitude to those around her because of her wealthy upbringing. Later, as the Wasp was incorporated into the mainstream monthly activities of her superhero team, her mostly stereotypical behaviour disappeared, to be replaced by that of a strong ally and loyal teammate. As comics aimed to become less light and to appeal to an older audience in the 1980's and 1990's, her character underwent further change to make her more realistic, as well as deal with modern social issues (in Janet's case, with domestic abuse).

Wally was only close to one relative, his father's sister, Iris. One summer, Iris offered to let Wally stay in Central City with her. Wally gladly took the chance to get out of his hometown and away from his parents, and looked forward to the excitement of the big city. Iris introduced Wally to Barry, whom Wally thought was dull and uninteresting until Barry offered to introduce Wally to the Flash.Barry used some simple super-speed tricks to pull off the double identity, and gave Wally the surprise of his life. In Barry's lab, the Flash told Wally about how he had gotten his powers - a stray bolt of lightning that hit a rack of chemicals, which in turn hit him.

A bolt of lightning struck chemicals which spilled on Wally granted him super-speed powers similar to Barry's. This was the exact same way in which Barry received his powers! Wally would later find out that the Speed Force used these accidents as a cover to grant super-speed powers to both him and Barry.

Barry revealed his dual identity to Wally and a new partnership was forged. Wally became Flash's sidekick, Kid Flash. Initially, Wally wore a costume mirroring Barry's. As a strategic decision during a battle, Flash altered Wally's costume to a primarily-yellow design. After the battle, Wally chose to keep the costume, and wore it through his whole career as Kid Flash.

Creators: Stan Sakai

Gender: Male

Character Type: Animal

First Appearance: Albedo #2 - Albedo Anthropomorphics #2

Appears in: 290 issues

Birthday: n/a

Origin:

Usagi grew up in a small village in the Northern Province. Usagi's father, Magistrate Miyamoto, was the head of the village. Very little is told of Usagi's life before he leaves for training.

Creation:

Miyamoto Usagi was created by Stan Sakai, and was inspired by the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi. This makes his name, Miyamoto Usagi, a simple pun--"Usagi" simply means "rabbit" in Japanese. Yojimbo means "bodyguard", and is not part of his name. Usagi is a Ronin, or masterless samurai, and walks the warrior's path having adventures in a feudal period Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals.

Usagi has been loosely tied into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe since the 1980s resulting in a number of crossovers in both series. He has also appeared in both the original 80's animated series and the more recent animated series that began in 2003 (see below for other media).

Character Development:

Usagi's childhood and training is told through a series of flashbacks across several stories, including:

Homecoming Part 1 & 2 (Critters V1 #10 & Critters V1 #11)
Samurai! Part 1 & 2 (Usagi Yojimbo V1 #1)
He was very close with Mariko, his childhood sweetheart. He vied for her attentions, along with other petty rivalries, with his 'friend' Kenichi. Tim Drake (Robin)

Super Name: Tim Drake
Real Name: Timothy Jackson Drake
Publisher: DC Comics
Gender: Male
Character Type: Human
First Appearance: Batman #436 - Year Three Part 1: Different Roads
Appears in: 1933 issues
Birthday: July 19, 1997
Died: None

Original Origin:

Tim Drake is the son of Jack and Janet Drake. When he was a child, he visited the circus with his parents and managed to get a photo with the Graysons before the show. That night, Tim met Dick Grayson before the young acrobat's parents were assassinated.

Tim Drake had followed Batman and Robin's career ever since the murder of the Flying Graysons. One day, he saw the original Robin on television performing a move he had seen Dick Grayson perform at the circus; he quickly made the connection that Dick Grayson was Robin, and after learning that Dick Grayson was the ward of Bruce Wayne, he realized that Bruce Wayne was Batman.

After the death of Jason Todd, Batman grew more violent and reckless. Tim noticed that this wasn't in Batman’s true character, and he sought Dick's help. At this time, Dick was going by the code-name Nightwing. Tim tried to convince Dick to retake the mantle of Robin, saying it was the only way to keep Batman sane. Dick partially agreed to this, but said that he would only help Batman as Nightwing. Tim did not like Dick’s decision, maintaining that Batman needed a Robin. Eventually, he was able to get Alfred to assist in altering the Robin costume so that he could help Batman himself. Alfred and Dick gave Tim their approval as the new Robin, but only so he could keep Batman sane. However, Batman protested that he did not want a new partner, while noting Tim's potential. Eventually, Batman accepted Tim as Robin under one condition: Tim had to endure physical and mental training before he could become Robin so that he would not suffer the same fate as Jason Todd.

While Tim was training, his parents were kidnapped. Tim continued to focus on his work and foiled the plans of a hacker thief. Meanwhile, Batman went to rescue Tim’s parents. However, Batman arrived too late. They had been poisoned -- his mother killed, and his father in a coma. Batman worried the tragedy might cloud Tim's mind with thoughts of revenge, but he was reassured when Tim saved Batman and Vicki Vale from the Scarecrow. Afterwards, Batman allowed Tim to take on the mantle of the Boy Wonder, and gave him a modernized version of the costume.

Creation:

Tim Drake was created by Marv Wolfman and Pat Broderick. He made his debut as Tim Drake in Batman #436, but in a flash back as a child in the audience when Dick Grayson's parents died.
